Chinese Art
In Mark Penn's recent book, Microtrends he identifies Chinese art as a fast growing trend. He points out that while many people in the West have a stereotype of China being technologically oriented, Chinese artists are extremely popular right now, both in China and the rest of the world. Chinese art, of course, goes back into distant antiquity, so it's not really surprising that it would still be a vibrant activity in China now. During the Maoist period, art, along with religion and other aspects of culture were suppressed, so now that things are loosening up a bit people are freer to express their creative sides. Chinese art today is far more diverse than ever before. While many artists are still influenced by the traditions of their native land, many have also been influenced by Western art. So with a huge and increasing prosperous and well-educated population, it stands to reason that art in China will be diverse and fascinating to follow.
